Xabi Alonso: “Real Madrid? The years go by, but the affection remains”

Xabi Alonso is being touted in Spain as a possible successor to Ancelotti at Real Madrid next season. Onda Cero radio reports that the Italian believes his time at the Bernabéu has come to an end, with the current Leverkusen coach being Florentino Pérez’s favourite.

In the preview of the match against Atlético Madrid for the UEFA Champions League , Xabi Alonso was asked about Real Madrid in the first question.

“Already? (laughs). The years go by, but the affection remains and the relationship is unforgettable. I am calm, I already have many things to worry about. It is not on my mind at the moment. I can’t say anything, we are in the middle of a season and all the clubs have big goals. Atlético has them, Real Madrid too and I am thinking about achieving them. The game is very important for both teams and I am focused on that”, he commented, in a press conference.

Leverkusen coach also spoke about the praise received by Diego Simeone.

“I have a lot of respect and praise for Simeone for everything he has achieved at Atlético Madrid . He has been in charge for 13 seasons and has had a huge influence on the club. This is perhaps the best team he has ever had, so congratulations to Atlético Madrid. They are performing well in LaLiga and the Copa. They have a lot of players, they can rotate and they are ambitious this season,” he said.

Xabi Alonso did not want to get involved in the dispute between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid over refereeing issues: «I come from Germany, I am not going to get involved in that debate, I don’t get involved in controversies. I leave that to those involved.»

“Tomorrow will be a very demanding game and we will have to understand the game. Atlético Madrid know what to do with the ball and know how to wait. They have players who know how to set the pace, but who have great control and passing. The players are ready,” he added.
