LaLiga: Real Madrid threaten to leave the championship over refereeing
‘Merengues’ consider changing championship, due to problems with president Javier Tebas and refereeing
Real Madrid are the most decorated club in LaLiga history , having won their 36th league title last season. The Merengues currently remain top of the league table, ahead of Atlético Madrid and Barcelona , but Ancelotti’s side are angry at what they consider to be several injustices against them.
In the 1-1 draw with Osasuna this matchday, Jude Bellingham was sent off for a comment the referee deemed inappropriate and risks being banned for 12 games if the words are deemed offensive.
According to Catalan newspaper Sport, Real Madrid see LaLiga president Javier Tebas as their main enemy, believing that he is “leading a crusade” against the club. On social media, fans are urging the Merengues to leave the Spanish league due to their discontent with the league’s management and to seek refuge in the Bundesliga , Serie A or Ligue 1 .
Leaving LaLiga would be a complex process for Real Madrid . It would require approval from FIFA and the Spanish league itself, which would have to facilitate the exit of its biggest club. Los Merengues would also need UEFA’s approval, a potentially difficult step given the club’s central role in the infamous European Super League, a project that was blocked after a huge outcry from fans.
However, in December, news emerged that the European Super League had essentially been relaunched with a new project that would “democratise football by allowing fans around the world to watch” for free. It was proposed that the aim would be to start the competition in September 2026, although Real Madrid ’s current plight could speed up the process.
The newspaper «Sport» highlights that Real Madrid «will not stop considering the possibility of moving forward with a European Super League, which would distance them from Javier Tebas [president of LaLiga ]». Despite the disappointment of the draw against Osasuna , the madridistas are focused on the second leg of the Champions League play-off , on Wednesday against Manchester City , at the Santiago Bernabéu.
