Real Madrid issues ultimatum and threatens to take legal action
In the letter sent to the Spanish Federation, the ‘merengues’ demand to hear audios between the referee and the VAR room after Romero’s tackle on Mbappé
Real Madrid has declared ‘war’ on refereeing. The Merengues sent a letter with a formal complaint to the Spanish Federation (RFEF), with a copy to the Higher Sports Council (CSD), in which they denounce irregularities in the report of the match with Espanyol, for LaLiga , which ended with a 1-0 triumph for the Catalans.
The decisive goal was scored by Romero, a player who, in the opinion of the Whites , should have been sent off for a tackle on Mbappé that the referee sanctioned with a yellow card. The VAR did not change the decision of the match referee. Luis Medina Cantalejo, president of the Referees’ Technical Committee (CTA), indirectly acknowledged the error, in statements on Josep Pedrerol’s El Cafelito podcast : «What everyone sees, a referee and two VAR elements cannot fail to see. I have a very clear idea of what happened, everyone saw it.»
In the letter, Real Madrid addressed corruption in refereeing, with allusions to the Negreira Case, although without mentioning it directly. The meringues demand to hear the audios between the referee and the VAR room, issuing an ultimatum. If it does not have access to the audios by Friday, Real Madrid is threatening to take legal action.
There is a difficult time between Real Madrid and the Spanish Federation. The RFEF scheduled a meeting to discuss the controversial issue of refereeing. Real Madrid, after being one of the first to confirm its presence, backed out, considering the timing of the meeting to be inappropriate.
