Sergio Ramos presented in Monterrey: “I don’t come here to drink”

Three days after being officially announced as a Monterrey signing, Sergio Ramos was introduced and explained why he decided to accept this new adventure, outside of Europe, seven months after leaving Sevilla on a free transfer.

“It met all the requirements I was looking for. The club and its values were fundamental. The ambition to grow and improve was very attractive to me. The possibility of playing in several competitions also attracted me on a personal level and the life here”, he said, in a press conference, pointing to the main objective… winning titles.

“My challenge is to come and win. I heard it’s a physically demanding league and that’s why I like it. Spain , France and now Mexico . I like challenges and I hope it’s a fun and competitive league, and why not win it again?” he said, speaking about these difficult months without playing football.

“I kept working day after day. I always thought that I would leave football and that it wouldn’t leave me. My motivation remained intact day after day, although it wasn’t easy being at home and missing football. I still have to adapt to the pitch and understand how the team works. I need at least two or three weeks to adapt,” he explained, hinting that he is not ready to make his debut in the next match.

Monterrey are currently 12th in the league and the Spanish defender sees this as a good challenge: “I come here with the mentality that trophies change teams. You can lose in many ways, but you can’t negotiate your attitude and you have to leave everything inside. My history is there and that can’t be erased, but I’m not here to drink, on the contrary, I come here to win new titles.”
