Blatter and Platini acquitted again in corruption case

Joseph Blatter and Michel Platini, former presidents of FIFA and UEFA, respectively, were acquitted again by the Swiss justice system in the case motivated by the alleged illicit payment – around 1.8 million euros – to the former French player.

The Swiss public prosecutor’s office appealed the first instance decision in July 2022 that acquitted Blatter and Platini. However, the Federal Criminal Court again found no grounds for conviction.

On March 4, the Swiss attorney general had requested a sentence of one year and eight months in prison, suspended for the same period, for the alleged illicit payment of around 1.8 million euros by FIFA to the then president of UEFA.

“After two acquittals, the prosecution must acknowledge that this criminal case has definitively failed. Michel Platini must finally be left alone in the criminal sphere,” said Dominic Nellen, the lawyer for the former head of European football’s governing body.
