He played under the identity of his dead brother and is suspended for two years

A scandal that has rocked Bolivian football in recent months has now come to an end: a player who played under the identity of his dead brother has been suspended for two years.

Because of this, Aurora de Cochabamba was also punished and will start the championship with 33 points less.

In question is the identity theft of player Gabriel Montaño, whose real name is Diego Hernan Montaño Moizán. The player lied about his name and age, as he was 25 years old and not 20, as he claimed. The player has been suspended for two years, while president Jaime Cornejo and director Sandra Valencia have been handed a three-year ban from all football-related activities and will have to resign from their sporting positions.

Montano used a false identity document, with which he pretended to be his deceased brother. The player has been playing in the Bolivian first division and was even called up in 2024 for South American qualifying matches against Venezuela and Chile, but he never made his debut.

In January, the footballer pleaded guilty to identity theft before the Sports Tribunal: he admitted to falsifying his age and using a false identity.
