Manchester United thrash Real Sociedad and advance to the quarterfinals of the Europa League
Manchester United thrashed Real Sociedad 4-1 on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 at Old Trafford. The home team’s goals were scored by Bruno Fernandes (three times) and Dalot, while Oyarzabal found the net for the visitors
With this result, the English team confirmed its presence in the quarterfinals of the competition with an aggregate score of 5 to 2. United will face Lyon in the next phase, with dates scheduled for April 10 (first leg) and 17 (second leg).
Manchester United returns to the field this Sunday, against Leicester, for the 29th round of the English Championship. The ball starts rolling , at the King Power Stadium. On the same day, Real Sociedad will face Rayo Vallecano, at the Estadio de Vallecas. The duel is valid for the 28th round of the Spanish Championship.
The game
The visiting team opened the scoring nine minutes into the first half. De Ligt brought down Oyarzabal in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. The number 10 kicked the ball into the corner and ran for the goal.
Soon after, at 12 minutes, defender Zubeldia arrived to block Hojlund’s shot, but hit the opposing player first. Bruno Fernandes converted the penalty and tied the match.
Two minutes into the second half, the referee awarded another penalty to the home team, after a challenge between Dorgu and Elustondo in the box. Bruno Fernandes, once again, scored with class and turned the game around.
Real Sociedad was left with ten men in the 17th minute. Right back Aramburu brought down Dorgu and received a red card.
There was still time for Bruno Fernandes to score his third goal of the match. At 41 minutes, Garnacho ran forward and passed the ball to the Portuguese player, who crossed the ball into the back of the net.
United turned the win into a rout in the 45th minute. Dalot took advantage of Hojlund’s cross and pushed it into the goal.
