Paulo Fonseca punished by Lyon after confronting referee
Confirmation given by Laurent Prud’homme, general director of the French club
Paulo Fonseca is in hot water after confronting referee Benoit Millot at the end of Sunday’s game against Brest , in the 24th round of Ligue 1 . The Portuguese coach will be punished internally by Lyon , in addition to having been summoned to appear before the Ligue 1 Disciplinary Committee.
“At Lyon , when there are problems with behaviour, whether it’s a player, a member of the team, a coach, myself, there are sanctions that are foreseen, of course. A financial sanction? It’s an internal sanction, maybe it will be communicated later. Of course we are not proud of Paulo Fonseca’s behaviour,” confirmed Laurent Prud’homme, Lyon’s general manager, in statements to RMC and L’ Équipe .
“I am proud of his immediate reaction [to apologise]. We did not ask him for anything. We will respect that too. We were all shocked, but I think he was too. We are waiting for the disciplinary committee’s decision and we will accept it,” he added.
Within the framework of Ligue 1 sanctions, the Brazilian coach risks a suspension of up to seven months.
RMC also says CD wants to act quickly, just as it did with Marseille president Pablo Longoria , who was banned for 15 games last week after accusing referees of corruption.
