Xabi Alonso and Real Madrid: “I understand what’s happening, but…”
Leverkusen coach does not want to talk about “speculation” linking him to the position of coach of the Madrid team
Carlo Ancelotti’s departure from Real Madrid seems increasingly likely. Whether it will be after the Club World Cup or after the Copa del Rey final on 29 April is still unknown, but one thing is certain: the Italian will not be in charge of the Madrid side in 2025/26. Xabi Alonso is the most likely successor, but for now, the Spaniard, who represented the Merengues between 2010 and 2014… doesn’t want to talk about it.
“It’s not a good time to discuss the future,” says the Leverkusen coach , who prefers to focus on the “important phase of the season.” Bayer are still fighting for their second title, six points behind leaders Bayern Munich, and for now, the Spaniard does not want to comment on the future. But he understands the speculation: “I understand what’s happening [in Madrid ], but what interests me is what’s happening now. I don’t want to talk about speculation and rumours,” he adds.
This is not the first time that Xabi Alonso has been talked about leaving, having caused a stir last season by winning the German league and cup with Leverkusen . Many European clubs have coveted the Spanish coach, who has played for Liverpool , Real Madrid and Bayern — all of whom have been linked with the coach’s signing — but who, last March, declared that he would stay for another season at the German club. Now, the future is uncertain, but the connection between the European champion club and the German champion coach seems to be intensifying.
